How to find mentors and create new opportunities.

A question I’m often asked is how to find mentors. In this issue, I’ll explore that topic and show how it ties into creating opportunities for your future. By applying the lessons in this email, you can start unlocking new and exciting opportunities right away!

A simple realization

A simple realization I’ve had is that most people in the digital world have an email address, so, you could be one email away from reaching someone you admire.

This new perspective has caused me to “plant more seeds”, and reach out to people when I have a question or have something to say. Many times you will not receive a response, but the few times you do can change your opportunities and the course of your life.

Two patterns I've noticed

  1. As I've gained more business success, more people respond to my emails.
  2. Being young is an advantage. Older, more successful people often have a soft spot for helping the next generation find their way.

The key to standing out

To break through the noise, you need to be thoughtful, respectful, and intentional with your message. This isn't about sending generic "I'd love to pick your brain" emails. It's about showing you've done your homework and care about making a genuine connection with another human.

It's not "mentor/mentee"

The best “mentor” relationships are those where both parties gain from each other. I don’t like the wording of “mentor/mentee”— it should be two people learning from each other.

When you reach out, think about what you bring to the table. When you're young and inexperienced, what you can offer to someone successful and experienced could be as simple as showing that their work impacted you on a deep level.

By showing an interest in the recipient’s work and connecting it to your life, showing curiosity and a willingness to learn, you stand out and can motivate someone to want to help you get further.

Real example #1

A few months back, I was listening to a 6-hour podcast featuring a British billionaire. In the final three minutes, he shared something that deeply resonated with my personal experience. Instead of letting that moment pass, I did some research, found his email, and wrote to him explaining specifically why those words had such an impact on me.

Twenty minutes later—he replied. It was the beginning of a genuine friendship. Soon after, he invited me to a small event where I met incredible people who became great friends and opened new doors I never imagined. All from one thoughtful email that showed I was paying attention.

Real example #2

During my travels around Europe, I found myself in Groningen, a small Dutch city. I wanted to connect with local entrepreneurs and after some research, I reached out to the Professor of Entrepreneurship at the local university. I crafted my email:

My email to a professor in the Netherlands
My email to a professor in the Netherlands

The result? I got to speak to 200 students in a beautiful historic building about entrepreneurship. But here's what matters most—several students approached me afterward, and some became close friends I still keep in touch with today. Those connections led to even more opportunities, creating a ripple effect I never could have predicted.

Your challenge this week

Think of 7 people you admire and would want to talk to. Don't aim too high with this —Taylor Swift is unlikely to respond. Instead, focus on people who aren't bombarded with messages daily:

  • An author whose work resonated with you
  • An entrepreneur doing something interesting
  • Maybe that local business owner whose store you love

Of those 7 people, 6 might not respond. But that 1 response could change your opportunities and the course of your life. And remember, rejection is just a part of the process—every "no" brings you closer to the right "yes."

Who is the author?

Hello! wave icon I'm Simon Komlos.

When I was 4, my parents told me I’d been adopted from a Hungarian orphanage. At first, I didn’t understand what that meant—but the idea stuck with me. It made me wonder: "Why me? Why did I get this chance?" That question lit a fire in me. I wanted to prove I deserved this second chance and make the most of it.

Around 6, I declared to my parents that I would become a millionaire. As my parents had never even seen close to a million dollars, their surprised reaction made me wonder: how could I make that happen?

At 12, I started experimenting with entrepreneurship—coding, creating, and failing over and over again while learning valuable lessons.

At 26, my co-founders and I sold a financial education company for $36 million. We had partnered with over 300 U.S. financial institutions and helped millions of young people learn financial literacy.

But that success was my 20th try at starting a business! I’m not particularly special—I got bad grades in school and was such a late bloomer I constantly felt behind my peers. But I started early, learned from failures, and focused on building skills, habits, and mindsets that turned my childhood dream into reality through a journey of entrepreneurship.

These same tools can help you create a life where you can be creative, make money, help others, and have the freedom to pursue what excites you. My mission is to break these big ideas into simple, actionable steps so you can take control of your future.
